Brokenness is all around us. It is in relationships, creation, expectations, health, churches, families, careers, unrealized dreams, and addictions.
While I don’t know the brokenness you have lived through, or are living through now, I do know that there is beauty in the journey to wholeness. Over the years as I have shared my story, both in part and in full, I have learned that we all have scars from brokenness.
Whether your brokenness includes abuse, loneliness, relationships ending, families unraveling, addiction, losing a job, a health crisis, or other circumstances that have broken you apart, these workshops, seminars, and retreats can be a place for you to begin to reframe your brokenness into beauty and wholeness. It is through brokenness we are vulnerable, we are connected to each other, and slowly by slowly, piece by piece, we can see our scars, and our healing, as beautiful.
In the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi, broken items are put back together with gold. Instead of discarding things that have broken, these objects – such as bowls, mugs, or plates – are glued back together in what is known as golden joinery. It is only in brokenness that these objects can be bound together with golden seams – scars that are now beautiful, always visible, and make the object whole again.
What if we looked at the brokenness in our lives and let God put the pieces back together with gold? What if we recognized the beauty in overcoming difficulty and in our brokenness, learned to focus on the healing within? What if we celebrated our scars as God’s work in our healing and honored the marks of beauty and wholeness? What if we learned how to live a better broken life, filled with beauty and strength instead of pain and sadness?
